阴-阳 yīn-yáng : fonctions, natures, relations

Le yin-yang est un tout, une unité, qui revêt une dualité interne. Ainsi, le yin et le yang forment un couple où ils sont deux polarités d’une même chose. Un yin et un yang relatifs donc, comme le symbolisent leurs idéogrammes chinois (moderne) représentant les deux versants de la montagne, l’un ombragé l’autre ensoleillé. Tels l’adret et l’ubac donc, le yin et le yang ont des fonctions et des natures différentes tout en étant en relation permanente.
La fonction du yang est de faire monter, disperser, dilater, diluer, réchauffer, accélérer pour donner un état plus vaste, souple, leste et vaporeux. Quant au yin, il fait descendre, rassemble, concentre, réduit, rafraîchit, ralentit, aboutissant à un état plus serré, dense, contenu, stable.
Par ailleurs, les textes classiques définissent 7 natures relatives du yin / yang, respectivement :
- sombre / lumineux,
- immobile / mobile,
- froid / chaud,
- inhibé / excité,
- bas / haut,
- interne / externe
- visible / invisible
Parmi ces 7 spécificités, la dernière visible / invisible mérite quelques explications. En effet, intuitivement on aurait envie d’associer le caractère invisible au sombre et à l’interne et donc au yin. Inversement la notion de visible s’apparierait plutôt au clair et à l’externe, donc au yang. Or, ce n’est pas avec ces notions qu’il faut raisonner sans quoi cette spécificité serait redondante avec les paires en question : sombre / lumineux, interne/externe.
Revenons aux fonctions : le yin rassemble, concentre et réduit, ainsi le yin est lourd et dense, il a donc un aspect tangible, de plus il ralentit tendant à l’immobilité et la permanence, ce qui lui confère donc son caractère visible. Le yang disperse, dilate, dilue, il est donc léger et vaporeux, de surcroît il accélère, il est rapide et mobile, donc il tend vers l’impermanence, vers un aspect intangible, expliquant son caractère invisible.
Pour attribuer un caractère yin ou yang à quelque chose, il convient d’abord de définir un tout dont on regarde deux parties relatives en les analysant au regard des fonctions et des natures du yin et du yang. Si nous prenons pour exemple un iceberg, sa face émergée sera yang car elle est à la lumière, externe et haute, elle est mobile, excitée et chaude car elle fond au soleil, et elle est plus légère, plus vaporeuse, plus impermanente que la partie immergée. Inversement la partie immergée sera considérée yin car plus sombre, interne, basse, froide, immobile ainsi elle est plus dense, plus permanente que la partie émergée.
Mais n’oublions pas que yin et yang sont des concepts relatifs et mouvants et que toute chose contient les deux et que les divisions sont infinies.
Enfin, le yin et le yang sont en relation permanente que l’on classe en 5 mouvements relatifs qui sont représentés dans le fameux symbole du Taijitu. Prenons l’exemple d’un arbre pour expliquer ces relations.
- Interaction : Yin et yang ont la même origine, ils créent la grande unité et la relation au sein de celle-ci. Racines et branches ont pour origine la graine, elles créent l’unité de l’arbre et la relation au sein de celui-ci : les racines sont yin et les branches sont yang. Les racines de l’arbre sont de nature yin parce qu’elles descendent en terre vers l’interne, elles ont un caractère plus immobile et sombre et elles concentrent l’essence de l’arbre. Quant aux branches, elles sont de nature yang car elles montent à la lumière, elles s’étendent vers le ciel, elles sont mobiles et légères.
- Opposition / Restriction : Yin et yang se conditionnent et se restreignent l’un l’autre : quand l’un est en excès il lèse l’autre qui s’atrophie, ou bien quand l’un s’amenuise l’autre prend de l’ampleur. Chez l’arbre au printemps lorsque les les branches se déploient les racines cessent de se développer et inversement, à l’automne les branches perdent leur feuilles afin de permettre aux racines de s’expandre.
- Association / Interdépendance : Yin et yang s’accompagnent et se supportent l’un l’autre. Ainsi, l’exubérance de l’un entraine l’exubérance de l’autre et l’insuffisance de l’un engendre l’insuffisance de l’autre. On dit que “Le Yang contient le Yin et le Yin retient le Yang”. Un arbre au feuillage luxuriant aura nécessairement des racines puissantes et inversement un arbre chétif aura probablement un faible ancrage dans le sol.
- Croissance / décroissance : Yin et Yang sont en cycle d’oscillation permanente dans un mouvement de recommencement perpétuel, tel le cycle des saisons que vit l’arbre. Ainsi les branches se développent au printemps, bourgeonnent, donnent des fruits en été, perdent leurs feuilles à l’automne et sont à nu en hiver. Les racines s’étendent à l’automne, s’approfondissent en hiver, cessent leur croissance au printemps et s’assèchent en été.
- Transformation, rotation, changement : Si une nature atteint son extrême, elle se transforme en l’autre. On retrouve cette idée dans le concept d’énantiodromie introduit par Héraclite. Dans la nature, on retrouvera par exemple l’arbre déraciné où les racines hors de terre redonnent des peu à peu des branches, et les branches enfouies en terre deviennent de nouvelles racines.
Les 5 relations du Yin-Yang agissent en permanence en même temps. Leurs variations constantes constituent un équilibre fragile, l’équilibre de la vie en mouvement perpétuel. Cependant, certaines amplitudes de variations tendant vers un vide (insuffisance) ou une plénitude (excès) perturbent le maintien de l’équilibre et créent des dysfonctionnements pouvant aller jusqu’à la séparation du Yin et du Yang qui est la mort.
